How Airbnb Has Transformed to Protect People from Infection

August 25, 2020

Unless you absolutely have to, travel is a risky proposition during the COVID-19 pandemic. Although we all know the importance of staying home to slow the spread of the virus, life hasn’t completely stopped for anyone. From family to work obligations, sometimes travel is unavoidable. That begs a couple questions: Where do you stay? Is it safe?

Airbnb, a service through which you can rent rooms and houses from private owners, has transformed its cleaning procedures to better protect customers and homeowners alike. Here’s how Airbnb can keep you safer than hotels in Walla Walla County, WA.

Enhanced cleaning procedures

In May, Airbnb launched a new Cleaning Protocol and two different programs for hosts. Hosts can either enroll in and commit to the main Cleaning Protocol, or they can sign up for the Booking Buffer, which creates a 72-hour time buffer between guest bookings. No one is to enter the dwelling during the buffer zone except to clean.

Specifically, the host’s “Cleaning Protocol will include specific information on COVID-19 prevention, such as the use of personal protective equipment, like masks and gloves for hosts or their cleaners, as well as disinfectants that are approved by regulatory authorities. A CDC recommended 24-hour wait period before entering is also required, as a precaution to address the possibility of particles that may remain airborne for a few hours. The protocol will be available to all hosts and we encourage them to commit and adopt these enhanced cleaning practices. Listings enrolled in the Cleaning Protocol will be available for stays immediately after the enhanced cleaning is performed.”

This new approach allows hosts to continue to generate income while ensuring that guests enjoy the highest safety and health standards possible.

Easier social distancing

Are Airbnbs really safer than hotels in Walla Walla County, WA, even with the enhanced cleaning standards in place? Consider this: hotels are designed to temporarily house anywhere from dozens to thousands of people, all of whom use the same elevators, stairwells, lobby and more. Sanitizing these common areas and high-touch locations is a never-ending job—no matter how often they’re disinfected, it only takes one asymptomatic carrier to spread the virus.

In contrast, Airbnb locations tend to be less communal, since they’re often in single-family units. Guests can look ahead of time to see who has enrolled in the Cleaning Protocol program versus the Booking Buffer for added reassurance—in this way, it’s much easier to socially distance from other guests. The company hopes that this level of transparency will show that they’re committed to keeping guests safe during the COVID-19 pandemic.
